Somaliland: Pro-opposition FM shut down , journalists arrested

Hargeisa , 18 Nov 2014 - Three journalists were arrested today  within the vicinity of October district in Hargeisa for allegedly operating a pro-opposition FM Radio. The radio equipment was also confiscated by the security forces.

Badigood FM Radio has been  launched early this year but its location was only found today despite numerous searches earlier in the capital.
Somaliland constitution does allow the opposition to open its own Radio although the ruling party was the first to have its own Radio in the country.
Somaliland is often criticized for muzzling the freedom of press and speech , a matter which is contrary to the democratization process in the country.
Three other journalists have also been arrested last month in Gebiley while covering protest against the government.
Political tensions have recently heightened in the country after a failed attempt to impeach the current speaker  of the parliament who is also the head  of the main opposition party.
Somaliland seceded from the rest of Somalia in 1991 after a bloody civil war in which  tens of thousands of civilians had died.
