The airport which has been built by the Soviet Union in the mid seventies has the largest runway in Africa.  It has initially been built as an army base by the Soviets and later taken over by the Americans after Siyad Barre regime switched sides as a result of the defeat in the 1977 war between Ethiopia and Somalia . The Soviet Union and Cuba had supported the Ethiopians in the final defeat of the mighty Somali army in 1977.
An entry on WK writes : The Berbera airport has a 4,140m runway, one of the longest on the continent. The runway was built by the Soviet Union (USSR) in the mid-1970s in order to counter the United States' military presence in the region. It was rented by NASA at a cost of $40 million USD per year, and used as an emergency landing site for the Space Shuttle from 1980 until 1991, when the government of former President of Somalia Siad Barre collapsed.
The improvement of the airport facilities in Berbera will enhance the profitability of both the airport and Berbera sea port as Dubai Ports or Ballore are expected to take over the stevedoring and port operations of Berbera.
