Ethiopia President of Afar region to be replaced in September

(Medeshi)- The long-running President of the Afar Regional State, Ismael Ali Siro, who has been serving since 1996, will finally leave his functions in September.

He was replaced a few months ago at the head of his party, Afar National Democratic Party (ANDP, ruling locally) by Taha Ahmed; the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF, ruling coalition) has now listed him as its candidate for the federal parliament, which will be reconstituted in September after the general election in May. EPRDF is contemplating dispatching tourism minister Amin Abdulkadir to take over from Siro. This choice is determined by the region’s high tourist potential. The region is also rich in potash. One of the reasons given for the change is that Siro failed to make the most of the region, despite its strong potential.
