EU donates IT and communication equipment to Somalia

(Medeshi)- As part of its program to enhance maritime security off the coast of Somalia and in the Horn of Africa, the European Union has donated Information Technology (IT) material including 25 computers and other equipment and six 4x4 vehicles to the Somali Coast Guard.
The aim is to improve the Coast Guard’s capacity and the donated is provided under the Capacity Building Initiative of EUCAP Nestor. Nestor is civilian EU mission which assists countries in the Horn of Africa and Western Indian Ocean region in strengthening their capacity to ensure maritime security and in particular to fight piracy. The event on Sunday (March 15) was attended by Etienne de Poncins, Head of Mission for EUCAP Nestor, and Pierre-Aimé Riccio, Head of the Country Office in Somalia as well as the National Security Advisor of the President of Somalia, General Abdirahman Sheikh Issa, the Chief of Defense Forces, General Dahir Adan Elmi and the Head of the Somali Coast Guard, Admiral Nurey. General Antonio Maggi, the Commander of EU’s Military Training Mission in Somalia, and representatives of the EU Naval Force–Operation Atalanta, were also present.
M. de Poncins said EUCAP Nestor, assisted by the EU Naval Force and other partners, had provided navigation, basic maritime skills and maritime investigation training in Djibouti to members of the Somali Coast Guard; and the delivery of these vehicles and the equipment would help to enhance its on-land capability and IT connectivity. ” General Issa said it was the first time EUCAP Nestor has supported the Somali Coast Guard its support was greatly appreciated.
