Assassins of Saado Ali Warsame Executed By Somali Authorities

(Medeshi)- Somali Authorities have executed Shucayb Ibrahim Mahdi and Farah Ali Abdi, two members of the Islamist terrorist group, Al Shabab. The two men were found guilty of killing five people, three of whom have been identified as members of the Somali Parliament.

Reports say that the two men voluntarily confessed that they had killed the lawmakers.

Somalia has been in a perpetual state of conflict and insecurity since its civil war in the early 1990s. Al Shabaab, an Islamist group fighting the Somali government, first emerged after the US sponsored Ethiopia military operations destroyed the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) in 2007. Al Shabaab, which means ‘the youth’ in Somali language, was the military wing of the ICU and had enough weapons to maintain control over some territory of the country.

One of the victims, Saado Ali Warsame, was an MP and a popular female singer. She was killed in July during a drive-by shooting, according to reports at the time. The other lawmakers killed include Mohamed Mohamed Heyd and Sheikh Madeer.

Al-Shabab regularly targets politicians and has attacked the Somali presidential palace at least four times in the past three years.

Al Shabaab has been responsible for terrorist attacks in neighboring Uganda and Kenya, with the most notorious of which taking place in 2013 at the Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi. Kenya was also victim of a terrorist attack during this year when Al Shabaab attacked the University of Garissa in Northeast Kenya.
