Somaliland - Erigavo airport absorbed by moving dust and abandoned

(Medeshi)- Erigavo airport has not been properly functional for decades after its service to the people of Sanaag has been affected by the civil war in the early 1990s

The airport resides at an elevation of 5,720 feet above sea level. It has a rough runway which is 1,220 metres long. The distance between the airport and Erigavo city is 3 KM.
Both Aden Airways and Somali Airlines used to have weekly flights to Erigvao in the early sixties till late 1980s. DC 3 propeller planes had easily landed in the non-asphalted runway.  That ceased with the fall of the late Dictator Siyad Barre and the secession of Somaliland from Somalia on May 18 1991.
The consecutive governments that ruled Somaliland from 1991 have failed to address the issue of Sanaag region particularly the aviation , health and transport infrastructure .
The initiation of the construction of BURAO Erigavo road has given a glimpse of hope to the region. But other pledged projects such as the rehabilitation of Erigavo hospital and Dayaha school have not been delivered. In fact $1.4 million allocated by the Somaliland development  Fund for Erigavo Hospital and Dayaha is reportedly missing. One of the Engineers working with the authorities has informed Medeshi that both projects are now on hold due to lack of funds.
Much had been spent for the last 24 years on Hargeisa , Berbera and Burao airports with little regard to the single airport of the largest region in Somaliland.
Sanaag region is rich but needs investment , know how and the right government to exploit its resources.
As long as regionalism ,clan politics and corruption exists in Somaliland, Sanaag will remain aloof with its rich resources.
