Somalia’s Parliament approves Independent Electoral and Local Boundaries Commissions

Somalia’s Federal Parliament unanimously approved the names of the newly formed Independent Electoral and Local Boundaries Commissions on Monday (July 5). Under the terms of Somalia’s provisional constitution ,the Commissions will be responsible for the registration of voters and the conduct of free and fair elections.
The elections are due to be held later next year as a central element in implementation of Vision 2016. There is still a great deal to be done before the elections can take place.  The members of the Commission were appointed in May and the voting, unusually, was carried out by secret ballot.
