10 killed in fighting between Somali soldiers in Mogadishu

Somalian Police said on Monday that at least 10 people were killed when fighting erupted between soldiers in Mogadishu.

Police representative, Abdi Hassan, said some soldiers tried to prevent the distribution of food aid coupons to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) for unknown reasons.
“Other soldiers intervened and a gun battle ensued involving 10 fatalities and at least 15 injured victims, including soldiers and civilians,” Mr. Hassan said.
He also said women were among the fatalities, and that security forces were investigating the incident.
Thousands of IDPs are living in the Mogadishu area after fleeing the Islamist group al-Shabaab, droughts or recent flooding.
Somalia has been struggling to reconstitute its 8,000 member army which collapsed with the government in 1991, plunging the country into two decades of chaos.
