Somaliland- Edna Aden's Mother's Day Pledge

By Edna Aden - This Mother's Day I have many reasons to be thankful. Three days ago we graduated 37 new Midwives in the regions of Berbera and Gabiley – parts of Somaliland where there are no health professionals for hundreds of miles.

It’s our Midwives, like Khadan and Ikraam, who are leading the charge – educating communities about maternal and infant health, providing vital pre- and post-natal care, and delivering mothers safely.

Together, we have achieved a lot: over 18,000 babies born at our hospital, as many mothers safely delivered, their families and communities stronger and healthier because of the work we are doing. But there is still much to do.

Last month, we mourned the loss of two mothers, both of whom came to us at a stage when nothing could be done - two broken families because of lack of proper obstetric care. It’s needless deaths like these that sadden me deeply, but also strengthen my resolve to continue training Midwives until every mother receives the care she needs and deserves. Our pledge: to train 1,000 Midwives for Somaliland.

This Mother’s Day, will you give the gift of safe motherhood by helping us train more Midwives?  Every gift brings us closer to our goal, and makes a real difference in the lives of our people.

Thank you for your continued support.
Edna Adan Ismail
