Somaliland government responds to IGAD communique about Somalia

The Republic of Somaliland notes that the extraordinary summit of IGAD leaders in Mogadishu on 13 September adopted a communiqué which reaffirms IGAD’s respect for “the sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence, and unity of Somalia.

” The Republic of Somaliland wishes to remind IGAD and the international community that the Somaliland people exercised their inalienable right of self-determination in 1991, ended the failed union with Somalia, and regaining its independence which Somaliland took its independence from Britain on 26 June 1960. The people of Somaliland has decided not go back to a failed union, and repudiates any claim by Somalia to its territory. It has nothing to do with state-building in Somalia, including the “electoral process” to which the communiqué refers. Somaliland has its own direct Presidential #elections in 2017 on the basis of universal adult suffrage, and a proud history of state-building and democratic governance which has seen power transfer peacefully following internationally monitored elections.
While taking issue with the summit communiqué, Somaliland places on record its strong interest in seeing Somalia achieve peace and stability, and its desire to work more closely with IGAD for the benefit of the region as a whole. Somaliland recognises that the challenges facing our region can no longer be simply dealt with on a national basis. Threats such as terrorism, piracy, and people trafficking disregard borders and we need to collaborate and work together if we are to successfully deal with them.
The Republic of Somaliland is a strong believer in the collective benefits of regional economic integration, and views IGAD as playing a crucial role in fostering economic cooperation. Thanks to its agreement with the UAE’s DPWorld to manage and develop Berbera Port. Somaliland will be in a position to extend its functional cooperation with IGAD member states.
The Republic of Somaliland respects the sovereignty of Somalia and stands ready to share lessons from our own successful journey to democracy and peace. We believe that increased cooperation between IGAD and Somaliland will bring prosperity and success to the region as a whole.
