Somalia and UAE in diplomatic row over military base in Somaliland

(Erigavo, Somaliland)- Somalia and the UAE are in disagreement over the construction of a military base in Berbera.

The UAE has recalled its ambassador to Somalia last week after the newly elected president of Somalia requested the Saudis to intervene in the matter of the military base in Somaliland. This has angered the authorities of the UAE who in turn recalled the UAE ambassador from Mogadishu according to reliable sources.
Somaliland parliament approved the UAE military base in Berbera on Feb 12 2017 with a majority.
On the other hand DP World from Dubai has started Berbera port management including cargo handling and stevedoring services after signing a 30 year contract with the government of Somaliland last year .
Somalia claims that Somaliland is a region of Somalia. But Somaliland seceded from Somalia on May 18 , 1991 after a failed union and a bloody civil war that had killed tens of thousands of people from Somaliland. The country has its own flag, army , security forces, banks, currency, elected parliament and elected head of State. Somaliland also has a functioning democracy.
