UN asks for Investigation on attack on ship with Somali Immigrants

Geneva, Mar 20 (Prensa Latina) The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) asked the rival parties in Yemen to investigate the air strike against a ship carrying immigrants that left 42 fatalities in the Red Sea.

The ship had 145 Somali immigrants aboard and was shot by a helicopter that also left dozens injured.

Filippo Grandi, UNHCR head, urged the rival parties to carry out the proper investigation to find those involved and thus, avoid another attack.

The air strike occurred last Thursday some 55 kilometers south from the Yemeni port of Al Hudeida and was perpetrated by a helicopter from the military Arab coalition supporting President Abdo Rabu Mansur Hadi.

That port is the main link to the Red Sea and it is controlled by the Houthis rebels, while the coalition led by Saudi Arabia and supported by some Arab countries and the United States, controls most airspace.

Grandi said that the Somali immigrants were seeking to avoid the Yemeni conflict addressing Sudan, in an attempt to reach Europe later.
