Somalia : 18 dead in battle over disputed Kismayo port city

MOGADISHU - At least 18 people have been killed in gunbattles in southern Somalia’s Kismayu, residents said on Saturday, in the heaviest fighting the disputed port city has seen in more than four years.
The clashes, the first since several former warlords staked rival claims on the lucrative port and fertile hinterlands in May, has stoked fears among locals of a return to the clan wars that tipped the country into anarchy two decades ago.

Saudi Arabia : Four Somali children and woman killed in house fire in Al-Suheefa , Jeddah

(Medeshi)- NADIM AL-HAMID . Arab News - Four children and a woman died from inhaling smoke in a fire that broke out in a house in Al-Saheefa district in Jeddah Thursday afternoon.
The dead were Somalis. The fire started in a room at the entrance of the first-floor two-room apartment. Rescue teams and firefighters evacuated seven residents and moved them to a nearby polyclinic. A 30-year-old woman was discharged from hospital after receiving treatment while a 7-month-old infant is being treated at King Abdul Aziz Hospital.

Somali man stoned to death by mob in South Africa - Video

(Medeshi)- 25-year-old Somali man Abdi Nasir Mahmoud Good, was stoned to death on May 30 by a mob in South Africa.
The violence was captured on a mobile phone and shared on the internet, sparking anger around the world.
The video contains pictures that many might find offensive.

Somalis march in Cape Town against South Africa attacks

(Medeshi)- Members of the Somali community in South Africa have marched to parliament in Cape Town to protest against recent attacks on foreigners.
Three Somalis have been killed this month and the Somali government has requested the South African authorities to do more to protect their nationals.

(Medeshi) - Seven people have died in the Somali port of Kismayo in fighting between two self-declared leaders of the strategic city and surrounding area.
Residents told the BBC the clashes began in the town centre at midday and lasted for about 40 minutes.
They broke out after one of the leaders tried to meet the defence minister who is attempting to resolve the crisis.

London : Prince Philip ( Husband of Queen Elizabeth) admitted to hospital

(Medeshi)- Prince Philip has been admitted to hospital for an exploratory operation, Buckingham Palace says. He was admitted to the London Clinic "following abdominal investigations" and is expected to stay in the hospital for up to two weeks.
The operation will take place on Friday under general anaesthetic. It is a planned, not an emergency, admittance.

Egypt set to boost Somali National Army

(Medeshi)- Egypt has held talks with Somalia on the rehabilitation of the latter's military facilities.
The Commander of the Somali Coast Guard Force, Admiral Farah Ahmed Omar Qare, told the media that two Egyptian generals had visited the country to study the ways rehabilitate the Somali National Army (SNA) facilities.

The Egyptian generals arrived at Mogadishu’s Aden Abdulle International Airport on Tuesday and were received by Somali military officials.

London Somali community fire 'racist attack'

(Medeshi)- Counter-terror police are investigating a blaze which ripped through a Somali community centre in north London where graffiti reading EDL was found daubed on the building.

Flames engulfed the premises, which are said to house an Islamic prayer centre, shortly after 3am on Wednesday.
Specialist officers from the Met's Counter-Terrorism Command were brought in as examinations revealed graffiti apparently linking the fire to the far-right English Defence League.

(Medeshi)- Somaliland, a self-declared republic inside Somalia, celebrated 22 years of "independence" last month. Somalia has recently again called for unity, but Somaliland's leader says his region is doing better than other parts of Somalia. 

Sitting on the Gulf of Aden, Somaliland is officially regarded as an autonomous region of Somalia. The two were, however, separate until 1960. During a civil war in the 1980s, 40,000 people from Somaliland were killed, and nearly half a million fled.

SBF Round 2 Events - Will SBF be fair this time to all Somaliland regions?

(Medeshi)- The Somaliland Business Fund (SBF) is intending to offer a second Call for Proposals for Grant Funding from June 21 to August 10, 2013 according to SBF. During this outreach period, there will be multiple training sessions offered by the SBF throughout Somaliland to explain how SBF application and selection process works. The communities will include Hargeisa, Borama, Burao, Berbera, Las Anod, Erigavo, Gabiley and Wajale.

Egyptian politicians counsel attacking Ethiopia over Nile dam

(Medeshi) - CAIRO (AP) — Politicians meeting with Egypt's president on Monday proposed hostile acts against Ethiopia, including backing rebels and carrying out sabotage, to stop it from building a massive dam on the Nile River upstream.
Some of the politicians appeared unaware the meeting with President Mohammed Morsi was being carried live on TV. Morsi did not directly react to the suggestions, but said in concluding remarks that Egypt respects Ethiopia and its people and will not engage in any aggressive acts against the East African nation.

NRC has mainly focused on Somalis who are displaced by the ongoing conflict and more recently by the drought and famine.

Ethiopian Migrants Return from Somaliland

(Medeshi)- The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says it has helped volunteer return of 42 Ethiopian migrants stranded in Hargeisa, Somaliland.

The return by IOM bus from Hargeisa to Jijiga, on the Ethiopian side of the border, took three hours. The migrants underwent pre-departure IOM medical checks to ensure that they were physically able to travel by road, according to the press statement from IOM.

(Medeshi)- DELEGATES from Borama in Somalia have visited Henley to celebrate the places being linked.
The visitors were greeted at the town hall by Deputy Mayor Martin Akehurst and members of the Henley Boroma Friendship Association, which was established 31 years ago.

UN opens new political mission in Somalia

(Medeshi)- The UN Assistance Mission in Somalia on Monday began its task of assisting peace-building and political reconciliation in the war-torn Horn of African nation, dpa reported.
Nicholas Kay, a veteran British diplomat, arrived in Mogadishu to open the UNSOM office.
The challenges facing the country are "tremendous, but we must work hard to seize the moment," he said.

London : Police target ‘khat’ houses in Woolwich

(Medeshi)- Police are targeting ‘khat’  houses in Woolwich amid fears they are recruiting grounds for Islamic extremists. Khat is a leafy stimulant grown in East Africa that delivers an amphetamine-like high for as long as it is chewed.

(Medeshi) Thousands of protesters have demonstrated in the Ethiopian capital to demand the release of jailed journalists and activists.
It is the first major demonstration on the streets of Addis Ababa since 2005 when hundreds of protesters were killed in violence.
Demonstrators shouted slogans calling for freedom and justice.
Ethiopia's governing party, the EPRDF, maintains strict control over public life in the East African country.
