UAE : Couple accused of torturing and starving Ethiopian maid to death

(Medeshi)- A woman allegedly tortured her two housemaids, beat them regularly and denied them food and medical treatment, which later resulted in the death of one of them, a court heard.
The victim weighed just 37kg at the time of her death and a friend of the woman, who testified against her, said that the suspect tried to bribe one maid with money so she would not talk to the police.

Police said two men and two women were shot to death at AK Home Healthcare in the 2700 block of Cherokee around 1:50 p.m. Thursday. The business is located inside the Cherokee Place Business Incubator.

Italy: 'Somali commits suicide after asylum request denied'

(Medeshi)- Florence, 14 June (AKI) - A Somali migrant leapt to his death from an apartment building in the central city of Florence, reportedly after authorities refused to grant him asylum in Italy.

The 31-year-old was killed instantly after he plummeted 20 metres from the third-floor and hit the ground below.

Kenya, Somalia in dispute over Kismayo port city - 10 dead

(Medeshi)- Nairobi, June 12, 2013--The acting attorney general in the semi-autonomous republic of Somaliland should withdraw his request to suspend the independent daily Hubaal, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today. A court ruled on Tuesday that the paper had been indefinitely suspended at the request of Aden Ahmed Mouse, according to news reports.

(Medeshi)- Nairobi — Six people have been killed in an ambush in northeastern Kenya's border region with war-torn Somalia, police said Wednesday following the latest in a string of attacks.

Egypt 'war' talk raises Ethiopia Nile dam stakes

(Medeshi)-  Egypt does not want war with Ethiopia but will keep "all options open", President Mohamed Mursi said on Monday, turning up the heat in a dispute over a giant dam Addis Ababa is building across the Nile.
In a televised speech to cheering Islamist supporters, Mursi voiced understanding for the development needs of poorer nations upstream in the Nile basin, but rammed home in emotive language that Egyptians will not accept any reduction in the flow of the river on which their civilization has been based for millennia.

International development agency Progressio, the evelopment Planning Unit (DPU) at University College London (UCL) and Somaliland Focus (UK) were invited by Somaliland’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) to act as coordinators of the nternational observation mission. The elections saw 2,368 candidates contest 379 positions across the country, and were observed by an international observation mission made up of 50 observers from 17 countries.

Somaliland : Raysut Cement plans construction of cement terminal at Berbera port

(Medeshi)- Oman)  --  Oman's Raysut Cement Co has announced its plans to build a state-of-the-art cement terminal in Berbera Port, Somaliland, and a grinding plant in Mukulla in Yemen through joint ventures with local partners in these countries.

The board of directors of the company has also approved a plan to build a new cement terminal in Duqm Port.

13 Years-old girl dies while being circumcised

(Medeshi)- Al Arabiya - Suhair al-Bata’a, a 13-year-old Egyptian girl, has died undergoing circumcision at a village in the Daqahliya governorate northeast of Cairo, Egyptian media reported on Sunday.

Kingston : Police launch murder inquiry after man 'stabbed to death' on Kingsnympton estate

(Medeshi)- A murder inquiry has been launched after a man was found 'stabbed to death' on the Kingsympton estate.

Police were called at about 6.20pm to Thursley House on the estate after a report of a seriously injured man.

The initial call was to reports of a man being stabbed although no formal cause of death has been established.
