In Somaliland, Hubaal journalists sentenced to jail

(Medeshi)- Nairobi, July 3, 2013--A court in the capital of the semi-autonomous republic of Somaliland today convicted the manager and editor of the independent daily Hubaal of defamation and sentenced them to prison.

Hubaal's editor, Hussein Hassan Abdullahi, received two years, while the paper's manager, Mohamed Ahmed Jama, was sentenced to one year in jail on charges of defamation and false publication of news capable of disturbing public order, local journalists told CPJ. The court issued a fine of 2,000,000 Somaliland shillings (US$300) to Hussein and 1,000,000 shillings (US$150) to Mohamed, according to news reports.

Egypt : Morsi overthrown in a coup

(Medeshi)- The head of the Egyptian army has appeared live on television, announcing the suspension of the constitution.
General Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi, flanked by religious and military leaders, said the chief justice of constitutional court would take the powers of the presidency.
His announcement means President Mohammed Morsi is no longer in power.

London : Mohammed Abdullahi stabbed to death in Camden Town

(Medeshi)- POLICE have identified the man stabbed to death in York Way yesterday (Saturday) as Mohammed Abdullahi.

The 20-year-old, who lived in Kentish Town, was pronounced dead at the Royal London Hospital shortly after 1am. Police had been called to a disturbance in York Way, the street which links Camden Road and King's Cross. A post-mortem at the Whittington Hospital's mortuary confirmed he had died from knife wounds.

Herbal stimulant khat banned in UK

(Medeshi)- The herbal stimulant khat is to be banned by the government, against the advice of its own Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs.
In January the ACMD said khat should remain a legal substance, saying there was "insufficient evidence" it caused health problems.
But Home Secretary Theresa May has decided to ban it, saying the risks posed could have been underestimated.
Khat will be treated as a class C drug, like anabolic steroids and ketamine.
