Malaysia : Saeed Abdalla Who Died In Bus Accident Planned To Settle In The Country

 - BENTONG, April 12 (Bernama) -- The wish of a Somali national, Saeed Mohamad Mohamud Abdalla, 31, to obtain a permanent resident (PR) status in this country was unfulfilled when he became one of the three people who died in the double-decker express bus accident at KM11, Jalan Bentong-Raub near Bilut, here this morning.

According to Saeed Mohamad's close friend, Muhammad Zaki Omar, 29, Saeed was in the process of applying for a Malaysian PR status after marrying Zarifah Alias, 26, from Kampung Padang Jeman Salor, Kota Baharu last year.

"Saeed was very keen to stay in this country and was in the process of applying for a Malaysian PR.

"He had told me about it frequently especially after the wedding," he said when met by Bernama at the Bentong Hospital, here today.

He said Saeed Mohamad was a doctorate of philosophy (PhD) student at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Skudai, Johor and was expected to complete his studies in two years' time.

Muhammad Zaki said he had known Saeed Mohamad since 2009 and he had been active in programmes organised by non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

He said Saeed Mohamed's wife was in her fourth month of pregnancy and during the incident, the couple was returning to Zarifah's hometown in Kota Baharu.

"Saeed had just returned from Somalia two or three days ago and the last time he had spoken to the victim was last month," he said, adding that Saeed Mohamad's trip to Kelantan was to visit his younger sister, Mariam who was studying at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kubang Kerian.

Meanwhile a check by Bernama at the Forensics Department of the Bentong District Hospital found that there were many relatives and friends of the couple there.

However, Zarifah's family declined to be interviewed by the media.

The couple's remains were believed to be taken back to Zarifah's hometown for burial.

In the accident at 12.30am this morning, three passengers including Saeed Mohamad and Zarifah were killed after the double-decker bus hit an electric post before overturning.

Also killed was Suhaisam Che Abdulla, 33, from Kg Sg Masin Batang Kali, Selangor, while 10 others suffered serious injuries and were treated at the Bentong District Hospital and Temerloh Distirct Hospital.
