It is with great concern that I write to you as the Vice-Chair of Somaliland Focus (UK) only four months after our last letter concerning the closure of the Hubaal newspaper.

Kenya: Halt Crackdown on Somalis , Human Rights Watch Says

 - Kenyan police and other security agencies should stop arbitrary arrests and detentions, extortion, and other abuses against Somalis during security operations,  Human Rights Watch said today. The government should also halt summary deportations and ensure that any undocumented Somalis are given the opportunity to file asylum claims.

 - On March 25, Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government, Joseph Ole Lenku, issued a directive to all refugees based in Kenya's towns and cities to immediately relocate to Kakuma and Dadaab, two huge overcrowded refugee camps in the north-west and east of the country. According to the minister, "emerging security challenges" in Kenya's urban areas necessitated this move.

Uganda - Bribery claims rock MPs’ Somalia trip

 - A visit by MPs to Somalia last month has run into trouble, with the Uganda police at the centre of ‘bribery’ allegations.
Some MPs claim that the trip, with ‘all expenses paid’ by police, was meant to compromise the Defence and Internal Affairs committee, which plays a huge oversight role over the force.

Ethiopia : Pexco terminates oil exploration project in Somali region

 - The Malaysian exploration company, Pexco Explorations (East Africa),  recently terminated  its oil exploration project that it has been undertaking for the past eight years in the Somali Region of Warder-Geladi and Ferfer localities.
The Kuala Lumpur-based company signed a Petroleum Production Sharing Agreement with the Ministry of Mines on October 18, 2005 to prospect for oil and gas in the region known as the  Warder-Galadi-Ferfer blocks. The company signed production sharing and petroleum development agreements that enable it to explore and develop hydrocarbon resources in the concession area covering 29,000 sq. km. in one of the remotest parts of the Somali Region near the Somalia border.
