UK Accused of Training and Supporting Deadly Somaliland Counter-Terrorism Unit


(Medeshi)- By Ben Bryant , The Vice - The UK is providing training and support to a Somaliland counterterrorism unit accused of unlawful killings and political intimidation, according to members of Somaliland's parliament.
The Rapid Reaction Unit (RRU), a Somaliland paramilitary counter-terror squad established in 2012, was deployed by President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud's administration on November 15 to prevent opposition members of parliament (MPs) from entering parliament in order to influence a vote, members of Somaliland's parliament told VICE News.

(Medeshi)- AFGOOYE, Somalia — Armed with machetes, the men push their way through the densely packed rows of trees, emerging every few minutes with large bundles of green bananas over their shoulders. A guard, his chest crossed with bullet belts, his hands cradling a Russian-made rifle, scans the tree line for intruders as the men throw the bananas on a trailer before dashing back into the plantation for another load. When the trailer is piled high with bananas, it is pulled by tractor to a nearby warehouse, where the fruit is sorted and boxed for transport to destinations across Somalia and as far away as the Middle East. After years of warfare that decimated an industry that was once the largest in Africa, the banana is making a tentative comeback in Somalia. Farms are stepping up production and eyeing overseas markets that have been dormant for years.

Contaminated drinking water in Somalia kills 50 persons

(Medeshi)- MOGADISHU, Somalia, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Multiple people have died in Somalia after drinking water from a newly constructed well in northern Mogadishu, officials said Thursday.
It is unclear how many have died because of the contaminated water.

Khadra Abdywahab Yusuf, 33, and Osama Abubakar Abdullah, also sold tobacco products without the statutory health warnings from Cleopatra Lounge in High Street, and failed to register their food business.

Somali taxi driver beaten unconscious and called terrorist in Seattle

(Medeshi)- SEATTLE - Officers arrested a 26-year-old man early Sunday after he called a taxi driver a "terrorist" and beat him unconscious, causing the cab to drift out of control and strike several parked cars before slamming into an apartment building in Seattle's Magnolia neighborhood, police said.
Investigators labeled the attack a "hate crime."
Adam Gaal, the 34-year-old cab driver, told police the incident began when he picked up three men and a woman in Belltown just before 2 a.m. Sunday and drove them to the 4200 block of 27th Avenue West.

Denmark compensates suspected Somali pirates for overly long detention

(Medeshi)-  - Denmark has compensated nine Somalis suspected of trying to hijack a Danish ship in 2013 because they were detained too long before being brought before a judge, the public prosecutor's office said on Monday.

(Medeshi)- Ethiopian military General Berhe Tesfaye  told  Somaliland sun in an exclusive inetrview that, there is a  new Ethiopian visa charges increase in Somaliland cross border travelers with Ethiopia, which means foreigners visiting Ethiopia shall cough a few dollars more as entry visa charges as per the government of Ethiopia.
