Sierra Leone peacekeepers to leave Somalia mission

(Medeshi)- FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) -- A Sierra Leone military official says the country is withdrawing from the African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia after being blocked from rotating its soldiers over concerns about the spread of Ebola.

(Medeshi)- MOGADISHU -  At least six people died of starvation over the past week in Somalia's central Buloburde town as a result of an ongoing siege by Al-Shabaab militant group, the local chief said on Friday.

The London trial of three senior staff and an agent of British printers Smith & Ouzman (S&O) is causing concern in Kenya. The defendants deny paying £400,000 (US$630,000) in bribes to win contracts in Kenya, Ghana, Mauritania and Somaliland. Most payments went to Kenya, where the trial has provoked the most interest.

Somaliland - USAID Financing the Expansion of Abaarso School

(Medeshi)- NEW YORK, Dec. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Abaarso School of Science and Technology located in Abaarso in Somaliland, and the US non-profit Horn of Africa Education Development Fund (HED), announced today a landmark agreement with USAID's Office of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA).  ASHA, through HED, has given Abaarso a $291,000 capital grant that will be used to expand the school and serve more students with additional classrooms, dorms, computer labs and staff housing.

(Medeshi)- Among the notable Somaliland governments  is the recent upgrade of Hargeisa water systems by boosting the supply of water through new water pumps and added infrastructure to the system.

Somalia's Shabaab claims to collect $9 million in donations

(Medeshi)- MOGADISHU - Somalia's Al-Shabaab militant group has claimed to have collected $9 million in zakat, or alms, in areas that it controls in the central and southern parts of the war-torn country.

London - Homeless Somali family's bench ripped up after one of them is hospitalised

(Medeshi)- The bench a homeless Somali family have spent the past nine months living on has been ripped up after the mother was taken to hospital suffering from cold.
The mother and son had centred their lives around the bench outside TK Maxx, in Tooting High Street, since April this year.
The family were still on the bench yesterday morning but had disappeared by the evening.
Witnesses reported seeing two police cars, an ambulance and a large crowd gathered around the bench at about 5pm.

Dahabshiil company is a pillar in Somaliland banking system

(Medeshi)-Dahabshiil company was founded in 1970 in Burao, the regional capital of Togdheer region. The company was later expanded to remittance services to serve the Somaliland people uprooted  by the civil war in Somalia  in the mid 1980s.

Malta - Somali charged with attempted murder of Sudanese men

(Medeshi)- A 49-year-old Somali man was this afternoon remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to the attempted murder of two Sudanese men.
